Program Description:

The Diesel Technology program is a two-year program designed to prepare students, both male and female, for entry-level positions in the heavy equipment industry or to prepare them in furthering their education/training.

Students enrolled in the Diesel Technology program will learn operation theory, maintenance and repair of large trucks and off-road equipment. The systems studied will include electrical, hydraulic, engines, air systems, brakes, and preventative maintenance. Emphasis is placed on the safe operation of hand and power tools, overhead crane, and forklift trucks.

After acquiring the fundamental skills of the trade, students will perform maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and trucks.

Along with technical material, this program will include units on leadership, communication skills, goal setting, problem solving, conflict resolution, and responsible decision-making.

  • Successful completion of the program, with a grade of “B” or higher, may result in college credits

Industry Certification Available:
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) test.
  • S/P2 Heavy-Duty/Diesel Technology Pollution Prevention
  • WA State Precision 21st Century Skills Certification

Prerequisites:
Diesel Technology I:
  • Reading proficiency at 11th grade level
  • Must have successfully completed Algebra 1 or Integrated Math 1
  • Excellent high school attendance record
  • Must provide own health insurance to participate in internships
  • Must provide own transportation to internship site and provide current car insurance
Diesel Technology II:
  • Must pass 1st year program with a B grade or better to qualify for 2nd year; limited space available
  • Must provide own health insurance to participate in internships
  • Must provide own transportation to internship site and provide current car insurance

Recommendations:
Courses in Small Gas Engines, Principles of Technology and Physics are recommended.
Note:
  • Employment in industry is dependent upon clean driving record, drug test, and background check; may affect ability to be placed on internship.
  • Upon acceptance into the program, student and parent/guardian are required to attend the orientation at Cascadia Tech Academy.

Lab Time/Theory Time:
Approximately 40 percent of the time will be devoted to theory and 60 percent to lab

Homework:
Average of 2 hours per week

Textbook Reading Level:
Theory material 11th grade

Note: It is recommended that all students attending Cascadia Technical Academy have medical insurance. Family medical insurance or student accident insurance is required for students participating in internships or clinicals.  Student accident insurance is available through the sending high school.
